AmeriCorps @ BELLBELL is launching a new AmeriCorps partnership that will strengthen our impact in exciting ways. AmeriCorps is a national service program that each year places thousands of Americans at nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based groups to meet critical needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other areas.
In 2012, in Boston, Detroit, and New York City, AmeriCorps members will serve in small teams at school-based BELL Summer and BELL After School program sites. Their goals are to:
In the classroom, AmeriCorps members are paired with an experienced teacher and help a small group of scholars to gain core literacy and math skills. Members also serve as a team to connect scholars to the community. They engage parents and build linkages between BELL's summer and after school programs and other school- and community-based resources. They find creative ways to expand a network of support for alumni scholars. They organize and execute service projects and special events with AmeriCorps members at other schools and from partner organizations. Through their term of service, members strengthen a wide range of skills from tutoring to community and volunteer engagement, communication, and project management. AmeriCorps members earn a living allowance and, upon completion of their term of service, an Education Award to help pay for college.
